I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,
When her wing is bruised and her bosom sore.
When she beats her bars and would be free;
It is not a carol of joy or glee,
But a prayer that she sends from her heart's deep core,
But a plea that upward to Heaven she flings-
I know why the caged bird sings!

- Paul Laurence Dunbar

To the Moment
My mind wanders. I follow where it goes. It leads me back to a physical world. My mind returns, an awakening. I ask, why am I here? Answers elude me. No matter where this crooked path takes me, this question is never answered. It’s never answered through return to the body; it’s never answered through the physical world.
This question doesn’t answer to reason; this question is only answered by a question. Where is my heart?
Like this wandering mind, my heart ventures. My heart winds its own crooked path. It finds its place. It never returns. Forever a piece of a moment. My mind winds its way home to my heart. My heart’s home is not in this body. My mind must return to the here, to the now. My heart is my mind’s destination. My body can be pierced, my mind can be tortured. My heart’s inexhaustibly strong, it knows where it belongs.
This heart belongs to the people; this heart belongs to the earth; this heart belongs to the moon, to the stars; this heart belongs to the moment.
